The Return of the Carlotta

December 12th '09, Maritime Seminars

Join us for Stephen Mohan's presentation and slideshow on the history and restoration of the Carlotta, an 1899 Bristol Channel pilot cutter.

In 1899 at Gloucester, England a fast, low, all-black "protection cutter" was launched to work for the Cumberland Sea Fisheries. In 1907, the Carlotta was converted to a racing yacht, and had a succession of wealthy owners including notorious socialites and financiers, and British nobility. During World War 11 she played a key role in a daring escape from the Germans. She is among the very last of the original Bristol Channel pilot cutters, and her restoration preserves an important part of maritime heritage.

Many thanks to the Mohans for an inspiring presentation about Carlotta's history as well as a detailed wooden boatbuilder's perspective of her restoration.

Of a piece with her colourful history, Carlotta's return is a remarkable achievement by the Mohan family, Stephen, Barbra and Jasper, working single-handed in Lund, a remote BC community. http://pilotcutter.ca/
