  • Restoring Carlotta, 1899 Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter

    4pm, Saturday, December 12th

    Stephen Mohan talks about restoring Carlotta, built in 1899 as an Bristol Channel pilot cutter and worked for the Cumberland Sea Fisheries before being converted into a yacht in 1907. She is currently being restored in Lund, British Columbia by Stephen, Barbra and Jasper Mohan.

  • Traditional Rigs Symposium

    Saturday, February 13th

    Our programme is about traditional rigs and their advantages, especially for owner/users; ease of use, ease of modification of sails and rig, and so on, with emphasis on boats 50 feet and under. Our schedule from 10:00am to 4:30pm with breaks for lunch looks like, a a session by Storch Sails Nanaimo on traditional rigs from a sailmaker's perspective, a panel discussion, and Q and A; break for lunch. Afternoon, a talk on rigging as well as a talk by yacht designer Tad Roberts on balance and rig design followed by a Q and A.

  • Vanishing Beacons: BC's Lightkeepers

    7pm, Wednesday, February 17th

    A local maritime historian, and accomplished sailor, talks about BC's Lightkeepers.

  • Understanding Your Navigation Instruments

    7pm, Wednesday, March 18th

    Captain Jacqueline Denee will talk on "Understanding your Navigation Instruments" including the operation of and limitations of: radar, VHF radio/DF, GPS/DGPS, Sonar, and Electronic Navigation Chart Systems (ENC).

  • Venue The seminars take place at Silva Bay's historic Withey Shipyard, now home to the Shipyard School, Canada's only full-time traditional wooden boat building school, and the Silva Bay Shipyard which operates a 100 T marine ways and a travel lift.

  • AboutThe 2009-2008 Winter Maritime Seminars and the 2009 and 2008 Silva Bay Maritime Festival Wooden Boat Seminars were put on as benefits for the Shipyard School on an independent non-profit basis. Admission was free; all donations were given to the Shipyard School. Our generous sponsors helped defray seminar costs.
